Anthony Johnson was born at the end of 1936. Educated at Wellington, he was among the last few called up for National Service. He pursued an eclectic career, starting with a stint in the City, followed by 10 years in heavy industry based in Manchester, all the while moonlighting as an amateur steeplechase jockey. He was subsequently a professional racehorse trainer in Lambourn. A spell living in the Caribbean followed, where he formed his own travel business. Back in England he took this business to a higher level, visiting close to a hundred countries worldwide.
